Welcome

Hello and welcome to my blog.

My wife and I relocated to Mangawhai, Northland, New Zealand - just over 100 km north of Auckland in July of 2018. Whilst not as active as I would like to be, this is a record of what I have been hearing.

A quick verification

KLOK 1170 AM referred to in the post below verified by email this morning. The verie signer is Huy Nguyen, who is the Station Manager and Chief Financial Officer. The report was sent to info@klokmedia.com.

A new logging

This afternoon after work I had a listen to the NZRDXL's SDR based in Russell. On 850 KICY was booming in - the best I have heard it, with Christian evangelical songs and Russian commentary. I tuned to 1170 to see if I could hear KJNP, but it was nowhere near as dominant. In fact I couldn't hear it at all, although others did later.

What I did hear and quite well, was KLOK on 1170 kHz based in San Jose, Ca. A report and a short sound file have gone to the station.

Australian Mediumwave List

The January 2018 PDF edition of the ACMA Broadcasting Station Book has just been published to web. This marks 39 years since the first edition was produced in 1979 in order to reflect all the changes in AM station allocations which took place 23 November 1978 upon implementation of the 1975 Geneva Plan. (This was the introduction of 9 kHz frequency splits).

What was interesting was that I went through my verifications to see what I had and what I didn't. There were so many frequency changes and stations that simply don't exist now, or who have changed call.

Another interesting thing to note is that the Australia stations still have callsigns, unlike the New Zealand stations. I still refer to 1ZB or 1YA, which is what they were when I was growing up, but they are in fact Newstalk ZB Auckland and National Radio Auckland.

The other interesting note is that 6NW Port Hedland 1026 ceased AM transmission on Friday 19 January 2018, after simulcasting with the new FM outlet for some weeks.
This is the first station to to switch off AM in the current phase of AM-FM conversions in Australia. (I don't know which other stations are going).

This is marvellous for the DXer and what a pity they don't do it here in New Zealand. We should be moving to digital radio. Now that our country can get rockets up into space, they should follow the UK model and have DAB radio via satellite available all over the country and get rid of most, if not all, AM. Now that would make DXing interesting!

Thanks to Ray Crawford for the news.
